Choosing a high school is an important decision, and we know you probably have questions. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often from prospective students and families.

About the Met

What makes the Met different from other high schools?

The Met is built around personalized learning. Every student is part of a small advisory, works closely with an advisor throughout high school, and participates in internships that connect classroom learning to real-world experiences. Rather than following one path, students build an education based on their interests, goals, and aspirations.

Is the Met a public school?

Yes. The Met is a free public high school open to Rhode Island students. There is no tuition to attend.

Who is a good fit for the Met?

Students who are curious, motivated, willing to explore new opportunities, and interested in learning both inside and outside the classroom often thrive at the Met. You don't need to know exactly what career you want to pursue—we'll help you discover it.

Admissions

How do I apply?

Students apply through Rhode Island's EnrollRI common application system during the annual application period. Visit our Apply page for application dates, deadlines, and step-by-step instructions.

Is there an entrance exam?

No. There are no entrance exams, interviews, or academic requirements for admission.

How are students selected?

Admission is determined through the EnrollRI lottery process in accordance with state guidelines.

Can students apply from any Rhode Island community?

Yes. Students from communities throughout Rhode Island are welcome to apply.

Can students transfer after ninth grade?

Yes. Openings may become available in grades 10–12. Families should contact our Admissions Office to learn about current availability and the application process.

Academics

Do students still take traditional academic subjects?

Rather than learning subjects in isolation, students engage in interdisciplinary projects, research, and real-world experiences that connect academic concepts to authentic challenges.

Is the curriculum aligned with state graduation requirements?

Yes. The Met meets all Rhode Island graduation requirements while delivering instruction through its personalized learning model.

Do students go to college after the Met?

Yes. Graduates attend two-year and four-year colleges and universities across the country. Others pursue apprenticeships, military service, careers, entrepreneurship, or technical training. Our goal is to prepare every student for the path that is right for them.

Internships

What are internships?

Internships are one of the defining experiences of a Met education. Students spend part of each week learning alongside professionals in workplaces and organizations throughout Rhode Island, exploring careers while connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences.

What if my student doesn't know what they want to do?

That's completely normal.

The internship program is designed to help students discover their interests—not require them to have everything figured out before they begin.

Are internships paid?

Most internships are educational experiences focused on learning, mentorship, and career exploration. Some students may later transition into paid employment or summer opportunities.

How are internship sites selected?

Internships are developed around each student's interests, goals, and learning plan. Advisors work with students and families to identify opportunities that provide meaningful learning experiences.

Transportation

Does the Met provide transportation?

Transportation is available for eligible students. Depending on where a student lives and where they attend school or internship, transportation may include school buses, RIPTA passes, or other approved arrangements.

Is transportation available to internships?

Transportation options vary based on the internship location and the student's individual plan. Advisors work with families to determine the most appropriate transportation arrangement.

Student Life

Are there clubs and extracurricular activities?

Yes. Students can participate in a variety of clubs, leadership opportunities, athletics, arts programs, and community events.

Will my student have the chance to make friends?

Absolutely. Students become part of a small advisory community while also participating in school-wide events, clubs, athletics, projects, and exhibitions. Many students build lasting friendships through shared interests and experiences.

How large are classes?

The Met is intentionally designed as a collection of small learning communities where students are known well by their advisors and teachers.

Campuses

How many campuses does the Met have?

The Met consists of six small schools located on three campuses in Providence and Newport. Each school offers the same personalized learning model while maintaining its own close-knit community.

Can families visit before applying?

Yes! We encourage prospective students and families to attend an Open House or schedule a visit to experience the Met firsthand, meet students and staff, and learn more about our programs.
